One thing that never changes is change. It is constant. If something is alive, it is in a state of change. Life is dynamic. And dynamic means changing. While this fact of life seems obvious, it is also true that people resist change. How ironic. This is mainly true of “modern” man and more so true of Western, industrialized man. Indigenous peoples understand the Goddess cycle of life -- birth, death, regeneration. Women also seem to have an innate sense of this cycle. However life in modern times has created resistance to change in both women and men. The underlying culprit is the need to control, to be in control. This is an insidious and dangerous need reflecting a core mistrust of life and living. Living an enlightened life is not a matter of management, it is an act of spiritual surrender. I believe that there are two main categories of “catalysts for change” --- contrast and pain. The light side catalyst for change is contrast -- the simple perception and feeling of what is wanted or preferred and what is unwanted or not preferred. This is a soft catalyst, a perception followed by a choice. These choice points appear all day long in countless ways and in countless situations. Some are so subtle that we do not even recognize we are perceiving and choosing. I call this category “the light side” as it is mostly a smooth and pleasant ongoing experience, virtually seamless. The other category is pain. Pain is a powerful catalyst for change. I call it “the dark side” as it involves some amount of suffering, is generally not pleasant, and is hardly seamless. In fact this category is significantly disruptive of the well-managed and controlled life. The experience of pain (usually emotional or physical) upends the functioning of the mundane machinery of a routine life. It can disrupt one’s entire belief system, unearth long-held assumptions, and put into question the very bases of one’s life. This category of change catalyst often catapults “Who am I?” and “Why am I here?” to the top of the priority list. Therein lies the light side of the dark side of pain. It can rewire your life and compel your presence in such a way that that you feel truly alive again. Nothing looks quite the same and all meanings have shifted. Most people avoid change fearing this second category of change catalyst. Fear of pain creates a bland complacency that even precludes the first category (contrast). People learn not to notice, not to feel or perceive contrasts that invite choice points. There also develops a general fear of owning responsibility for one’s life and choices. And so the pervasive practice of blaming people and circumstances for one’s limitations in life. To resist change is to court all manner of physical and mental/emotional symptomatology. To resist change is to restrict the channel of life flow, of spiritual calling, of divine disruption. This channel is ever raging, full and flowing. It is the energetic passion of our having manifest in this life. We are called to keep up with ourselves….. with our higher, fuller, brighter Self. The ride of life is here, it is in you and around you. The only question you must answer is, are you having fun yet? Are you allowing or resisting the pulsing presence of your own life flowing through you? How will you know? Look at your life --- your work, your health, your relationships, your abundance. How fresh and alive do you feel in each of these areas? Are you bored, irritable, stale, lethargic? Or are you curious, creative, playful, passionate? Only you know the answers for your own life. I invite you to allow the sweet winds of change to enliven your life, in all ways, large and small. Truly living your life is why you came……remember? Victoria A.
