Conscious Living

"Conscious living"… sounds a little redundant doesn't it? How else would you live? Perhaps different people would define this phrase in various ways. Their definitions would depend upon what they define as "conscious" and "living". I'll offer my version. I invite you to really give this some thought… and then offer yours. Don't skip this part, because it could literally change your life.

For me, "conscious living" means "awareness" and "thriving". Sounds pretty simple, but honestly, how often does this describe your own life? What level of awareness do you practice during most of your day? Are you thinking, "Oh, that sounds like so much work!" Practicing awareness need not give you a cramp! Nor, is it a matter of concentration. For me, it's a blend of mind plus heart. You must intend to turn a light on inside yourself - to honestly perceive yourself (thoughts, feelings, & behaviors). This is more an intention of the heart than vigilance of the ego. Softly wish to know you better - a beautiful invitation indeed. This is to be practiced without judgment. I'll repeat this and tell you that this is the key: to increase your self-awareness without any judgment, criticism or blame. This is the domain of the heart. Practice creates compassion. And compassionate awareness opens the door to "thriving". What is "thriving"?

Thriving is beyond surviving. Indeed, it is really a different page. How many people live life focused on survival? Regarding work, for example, how many people work to survive, including "for the benefit package"? What benefit is it to be in bondage over 40 hours of the week? Or how about those who are in bondage to a relationship for the same reasons - security and "standard of living"? How high a standard is fear (of leaving)? Thriving is on another page indeed. It's about love, expansion, expression, exploration. Read books about anyone who has achieved greatness and you will read about adventures of great faith and courage. Risk is required and failure is not in their vocabulary.

So my version of "conscious living" is a beautiful balance of Yin and Yang - the compassion required to be self-aware and the courage to really live your authentic life. OK, now it's your turn. What does "conscious living" mean to you? How would it change your life?
